About
the series
Abandonados is a metaphor for the way we perceive nostalgia, for how reliving events that belong to the past affects us and how memory brings them into the present stripped of all context and meaning.
Nostalgia often presents itself as a return, but we never go back to the same place. What we remember is not the event itself but a version of it, a fragment that survived time, separated from the circumstances that gave it meaning. To remember is, in a way, to abandon. In bringing something into the present, we leave behind everything that surrounded it.
The cars in this series, from roughly the first half of the twentieth century, were once a promise of movement, of modernity, of the future. They carried families, journeys, Sundays. Today they wait in an empty field, with no roads and no owners, while rust spreads across the bodywork and rain and sun erase what remains of their original form.
Like memories, they no longer keep their story. No one knows who drove them or where to. And yet, in that bareness, they move us. The less context remains, the more room there is for emotion, and the past stops being a story and becomes a feeling.
The series pauses at that in-between point, between what was and what remains. It does not try to reconstruct a story but to show the trace, the matter that time slowly transforms and that, even so, still tells us something.
