About
the series
Fuera de tiempo grows out of an interest in the photochemical processes that gave rise to photography as a means of expression. Techniques such as cyanotype and Van Dyke, which photography gradually left behind on its way towards immediacy, are brought back here to produce images.
The series works with what has also fallen out of its time. What has lost its function, what use has gradually displaced, what hardly anyone looks at any more. Printed with a chemistry that has also lost its place, this encounter between two obsolescences becomes a metaphor, and in it both recover something. What is photographed is looked at again. The process produces meaning again.
Each print is made by hand. The emulsion is brushed onto the paper, exposed, washed. The marks remain visible, in the uneven edges, in the textures, in the areas the chemistry did not reach. The image does not hide how it was made, and in that materiality it comes closer to what it shows, which also carries the traces of time on its surface.
The same image may appear more than once, in different processes and on different papers. Each version is unique, and none is definitive. The series is still in progress, an open inquiry into the materiality of photography and of what it portrays.
